Tharman Shanmugaratnam: Indian-origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam was sworn in as the President of Singapore on Thursday (14 September). He has become the 9th President of Singapore. It is noteworthy that the tenure of President Halimah Yacob ended on September 13. In such a situation, it was believed that Tharman Shanmugaratnam would assume his tenure as President on Thursday.
Earlier, 66-year-old Shanmugaratnam had registered a historic victory in the Singapore Presidential elections. He defeated Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian of China by a big margin. Kok got 15.2 percent votes and Tan got 13.88 percent votes. At the same time, Shanmugaratnam got 70.4 percent i.e. 17 lakh 46 thousand 427 votes. It is known that voting for the post of President was held in Singapore on September 1.

With taking oath as the President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam has also joined the list of those Indians who are raising the flag of India across the world. According to a report, the dominance of Indians in world politics is continuously increasing. More than 200 people of Indian origin are included in the leadership class in 15 countries including America and England. Of these, 60 hold positions up to Cabinet Minister.
