Woman with ‘fused’ kidney gives life to husband

A woman, who was suffering from “fused” kidney since birth, has donated one of her kidneys to her husband. Her husband was admitted in a private hospital here and his kidney had stopped working. The doctors gave this information. A “fused” kidney is usually a congenital defect in which the two kidneys are fused together, giving them a horseshoe-like shape.

Doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket performed the kidney transplant and according to them this is the first case of its kind. Investigation revealed that the kidney of the woman’s husband (53) was not working and kidney transplant was the last resort. On this the woman (49) offered to donate one of her kidneys to her husband.

Ananth Kumar, senior doctor of the hospital, said that preliminary tests conducted to ascertain the eligibility of the woman for kidney donation revealed that her kidney was shaped like a horseshoe. Kumar said that even after this disturbance, the woman was healthy and was eligible to donate a kidney. He said that this complicated operation was done carefully, which was successful. A team led by Kumar performed the operation with the help of a robot.
