ENG vs AUS: Ruckus over Steve Smith’s run out, questions raised on Nitin Menon’s decision, MCC explained the rules

Steve Smith Run Out Controversy: The Ashes 2023 series being played between England and Australia has seen a lot of excitement so far. Controversy is now being seen regarding Steve Smith’s run out decision on the second day of the 5th Test match being played at The Oval. In the Oval Test match, on the throw of England’s substitute fielder Mark Elham, Smith’s bat was slightly out of the crease in order to take the second run. Everyone from Smith thought he was out, but when the third umpire Nitin Menon gave him not out, everyone was shocked.

Third umpire Nitin Menon is now also facing criticism regarding this run out decision of Steve Smith. Taking advantage of this lifeline, Smith played a brilliant inning of 71 runs. Due to this, Australia’s team was also able to take a lead of 12 runs against England’s first innings score. On the other hand, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the organization that makes the rules of cricket, also gave clarification on this decision of Smith by tweeting on its behalf.

Marylebone Cricket Club tweeted about this decision that the player will not be shown out until the bails fall completely down from the stumps or a stump is uprooted from its place. In the video of Smith’s run out decision, Bairstow does not move completely when Bairstow hits the stumps.

We have received a few questions regarding the decision in the below video.

Law 29.1 states: "The wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or one or more stumps are removed from the ground." (1/2) pic.twitter.com/RyZMgf5ItF
