Born on 16 January 1978, Vijay Sethupathi grew up in Rajapalayam. He studied in Chennai from sixth class. Vijay told that he was a ‘below average student’ in school and attended MGR Higher Secondary School in Kodambakkam and Little Angels Mat. He took a degree in commerce from Dhanraj Baid Jain College (affiliated with the University of Madras) in Thoraipakam.
She auditioned for a role in Nammavar (1994) at the age of 16 but was rejected due to her short height. From salesman in a retail store, cashier in a fast food joint to a phone booth operator, he did various menial jobs to earn money. Then after finishing college, he joined a wholesale cement business as an assistant accountant. Later, he moved to Dubai as an accountant as he was getting more salary than in India and also had to take care of his three siblings.
In Dubai, he met his Jessie online and the two dated for a long time before tying the knot in 2003. Unhappy with his job, he returned to India and joined a marketing company. After this, he joined the theater group Koothu-P-Pattarai in Chennai as an accountant and actor and saw the actors closely.

She worked in several short films with Karthik Subbaraj who later cast her in feature films as well.
