  1. Known history of Nipah: As far as we have been able to find out, the first cases of this virus were seen in the year 1998-99. Its cases were confirmed in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia. More than 250 people were affected by this virus here. And this virus created an uproar the first time itself.
  2. Because this virus was seen for the first time in Malaysia at a place named Kampung Sungai Nipah, that is why it was named Nipah virus.
  3. At that time, pigs were the carriers of this disease. And about 40 percent of the people admitted to hospitals suffered from severe nervous disease. The sad thing is that those people could not be saved. Since then the severity and mortality rate of this virus created fear.
  4. Relationship between viruses and bats:Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus. That means it spreads from animals to humans. Scientists estimate that three out of every four infectious diseases transmitted to humans come from animals. Bats are the only mammals that fly, and are the most numerous after rodents. They mainly fly for food.
  5. The Flying Foxes carry many dangerous viruses with them. Due to having so many viruses inside them, bats have learned to live a healthy life, but coming in contact with them can pose a serious threat to humans.
  6. Scientists say that many viruses are found in bats which infect people more than other animals. Scientists believe that the viruses like SARS, Nipah, Ebola and Corona came to humans from bats only.
  7. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nipah virus (NiV) is emerging rapidly. Nipah virus is transmitted to humans through fruits and trees. In India too, cases of Nipah have been caused by bats or consumption of infected fruits, especially the juice of raw dates.
  8. In the year 2004, some people in Bangladesh fell prey to this virus. According to reports, these people had tasted the liquid coming out of palm trees. Which can get infected by fruit bat.
  9. After 2001, cases of Nipah virus started appearing in India and Bangladesh also.
  10. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Nipah virus infection can cause encephalitis. In which meningitis can occur. Approximately half of the patients may have neurological problems.
