Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead a ceremony in the Central Hall of Parliament on Tuesday to remember the country’s rich parliamentary heritage and pledge to make India a developed nation by 2047. This ceremony of about one and a half hour will start and end with the national anthem and will be followed by lunch. After this, the top leaders will take all the MPs to the new Parliament House.
“Members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha are requested to attend a function on September 19 at 1200 hrs to commemorate the rich heritage of the Indian Parliament and resolve to make India a developed nation by 2047,” a Rajya Sabha bulletin said. Gather in the Central Hall of Parliament at 11 o’clock.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi will deliver the welcome address at the function in the Central Hall and senior MPs will also address the occasion.
Sources said BJP MP Maneka Gandhi, who is also the senior-most Lok Sabha member, will be the first speaker. After Maneka Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been approached to address the function. However, sources close to Singh said that the former Prime Minister has not been well for some time and may not be present.
The ceremony will also be addressed by senior MP Shibu Soren, whose combined experience in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is more than any other member. Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal, Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary will also address the ceremony.
Sources said the Prime Minister is also expected to take a copy of the Constitution to the Central Hall of Parliament during the ceremony.
Before the ceremony in the Central Hall, photographs of three different groups will be taken in the courtyard of the Old Parliament House. The first photograph will be of members of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, the second of Rajya Sabha members and the third of Lok Sabha members.
The proceedings of the Lok Sabha will begin at 1.15 pm in the new building, while the Rajya Sabha meeting will begin at 2.15 pm.
Senior Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Pralhad Joshi personally supervised the arrangements for the ceremony and held discussions with officials. After the Union Cabinet meeting he visited the Central Hall.
The proceedings in the new Parliament House are starting on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, which is considered auspicious for any new beginning.
