Congress has also claimed to bring the bill first

Before NCP, Congress claimed that its party was the first to bring this bill. Even Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary even said that this bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha during the tenure of Manmohan Singh.
Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that in 1989, the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi wanted reservation for women in local body elections. Keeping this in mind, he brought this bill. The Congress MP said that the governments of Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh could not pass this bill due to challenges. He said that Sonia Gandhi had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this bill.
Congress called women’s reservation bill a ‘jumla’
