Mumbai. Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit worked in only two films. His superhit film ‘Dil’, which came in the year 1990, was a superhit and broke records. Indra Kumar directed this film and he brought the Aamir-Madhuri pair together on screen. The chemistry of both was given a lot of love by the audience. But there was a time when the makers and distributors called this pair useless. Even a film of Aamir, who is called Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood, could not find any buyer.
If you are thinking Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit starrer ‘Dil’ is her debut film, then you are wrong. Before ‘Dil’, Aamir and Madhuri’s film- ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahi’ was ready. Impressed by Aamir’s performance in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, director Y. Nageswara Rao signed him for his upcoming film.
Aamir Khan’s chemistry with Juhi Chawla in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ was well received at the box office. But the director decided to cast Madhuri Dixit opposite Aamir. The film was completed in 1989. When the makers screened the film for the distributors, they did not like the new pairing of Aamir-Madhuri and refused to buy the film.
The distributors said that apart from Aamir Khan’s opposite Juhi Chawla, the audience would not like any other actress. He said that no one would like to see this film based on one sided love. Apart from this, Madhuri’s role was more powerful than Aamir’s. In this way, ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahi’ faced many rejections and was shelved for a year.
When ‘Dil’ released on June 22, 1990 and became one of the biggest hits of the year, Aamir-Madhuri’s sizzling chemistry gained popularity. Distributors also tried to capitalize on this and bought ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahi’. A month after ‘Dil’, on July 20, 1990, ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahi’ was released in theatres. But it did not get as much success as ‘Dil’ and the film could collect average at the box office. After this both never worked together.
